Soul Jah Love Declared A Provincial Hero Status

Soul Jah Love, as the late legend was affectionately called, becomes the fifth non – political figure to be conferred hero status.

Soul Jah Love

Zimdancehall veteran Soul Musaka popularly known as Soul Jah Love has been declared Provincial Heroe Status.

The Zimbabwe African National Union Patriotic Front (ZANU PF) released a press statement declaring the veteran a Provincial Heroe Status. Since the day he passed on, there has been requests for a state funeral to celebrate Soul Jah Love’s life.

One of the creatives, Havok ZW, went on to create a partition for the requests of a state funeral. So far the hero status has been granted and now the masses wait on the date to be announced.

Many citizens started to ask questions on how valid the declaration was. Zimbabwean citizens have come to understand that the only people eligible for such a declaration are the ones who fought in the liberation war to independence.

However, here is what the constitution say on who deserves such declaration:

According to the National Heroes Act [Chapter 10:16], designation of heroes is done by the President where “the President considers that any deceased person who was a citizen of Zimbabwe has done well for his country on account of his outstanding, distinctive and distinguished service to Zimbabwe, he may, by notice in Gazette, designate such a person a national, provincial or district hero of Zimbabwe.”

National hero status is the highest honour that can be conferred on individual and the recipients are entitled to burial at the National Heroes Acre. The other status is liberation war hero (formerly district hero). The former are buried at the provincial heroes acres while the later are buried at district shrines if their families agree.

Some went on to ask why they chose to declare Soul Jah Love but didn’t declare Cde. Chinx or Dr. Oliver Mtukudzi. However, unbeknown to many, Oliver Mtukudzi and Chinx received the declaration.

The Late Zimbabwean musician, Dickson Chingaira, popularly known as Cde Chinx who died on June 16, 2017 was declared the status of Provincial Hero by former President Robert Mugabe.

Moreso, Dr. Oliver Mtukudzi who died on January 23, 2019 was declared a national hero by His Excellence President Emerson Dambudzo Munangagwa. The Mtukudzi family were grateful for the recognition but didn’t go on to bury Dr. Oliver Mtukudzi on Heroes Acre but at his rural homestead.
