Asaph Inks A Deal w/ Def Jam Recordings Africa

Born Tafadzwa Tarukwana on the 11th of January 1992 (popularly known as Asaph) just received an early birthday gift for his career. Asaph posted on Twitter a picture of himself at the Universal Music Group (UMG) turf and promised to post the final verdict for the occasion. The community was thrilled and eager to know what’s next for rapper.

After 48 hours, Def Jam Africa Recording Label welcomes Asaph to the label. The Bulawayo rapper penned a recording deal with the prestigious label, Def Jam Africa which was launched in May 2020.

“We officially welcome Zimbabwe’s finest AsaphAfrika to the Def Jam Recordings Africa family. We are extremely excited to create even more legendary music with you.” Def Jam Recordings Africa

UMG expanded their franchise and introduced a pan African label division “following the blueprint” of Def Jam Recordings. In a press release, the managing director of Universal Music’s Sub-Saharan Africa & South Africa division noted,

“Many of us in Africa grew up on music from legendary labels under the UMG umbrella. From Blue Note for jazz fans, to Mercury Records, which was Hugh Masekela’s first US label and Uptown Records, the home of Jodeci and Mary J Blige and many more. For those into hip-hop, no label has such cultural and historic relevance as Def Jam. From Run-D.M.C., to LL Cool J, Disturbing tha Peace, JAY-Z, Big Sean and Kanye West, Def Jam has always been the ultimate destination for hip-hop and urban culture worldwide. It is a historic achievement that we’re now able to bring this iconic label to Africa, to create an authentic and trusted home for those who aspire to be the best in hip-hop, Afrobeats and trap. Together, we will build a new community of artists, that will push the boundaries of hip-hop from Africa, to reach new audiences globally” – Pitchfork

Asaph joins Larry Gaaga, Boity, Cassper Nyovest, Nadia Nakai, and Nasty C. During his interview with Trevor, the rapper always had hopes to breakthrough beyond our boarders but first make a name in Zimbabwe.

“As a rapper l look forward to make a name first in Zimbabwe before the lights of America or Europe shines on me. I would love to do it step by step than to jump one for the other. Which means from my neighborhood to the city, from the city to the nation, from the nation to region, from region to Africa, from Africa to the world…” Asaph noted.

The light at the end of the tunnel started to shine when Asaph was shortlisted MTV Africa Music Awards (MAMA) last year in 2020. The rapper was shortlisted along with Gemma Griffiths, Winky D and Jah Prayzah. Lending this deal really means a lot to his career and ZimHipHop as a community.

Asaph’s career took off in 2007 and had his breakthrough song in 2018 with ‘Mambo’ featuring Fish F Ndaramu, Tha Dawg. Produced by Rayobeats.

We hope this deal delivers. Let us know what you think about this venture.
