ZimHipHop Awards: 10th Edition Nominees & Winners

0

Yes, yes. It’s that time of the year again when great work gets the recognition it deserves. The ZimHipHop Awards: 10th Edition Ceremony, sponsored by Pogues. It is held at the Harare International Conference Centre in Harare, Zimbabwe. Hosted this year by multi Award winning dancer, John Cole and South African Soap actor, Mbo Mahocs.

This year’s edition featured Holy Ten and R. Peels leading with 7 nominations each. Holy Ten came through mid 2020 and set the tone for ZimHipHop with his emotional song, Ndaremerwa, which addressed the abuse of Human Rights in Zimbabwe and endorsed the #ZimbabweanLivesMatter movement.

The country fell in love with his style and sound from the onset. Ndaremerwa promoted him and his channel largely. The visuals capture your attention and keeps you coming back with intrigue. The rapper won 3 awards; Best New Comer, Song Of The Year and People’s Choice Award.

R. Peels, the rival, begged two awards; Best Male Artist and Best Hustle. This year’s edition finally recognized the rapper. Back from the drop of Eva Beautiful album, R. Peels felt like the Ceremony failed to recognize his work. He believes that he is the only rapper that makes solid albums as compared to others.

Masvingo rapper, Jungle Loco, won the Best Album of the Year for Bata MaStreets (The First Book Of Loco). This was everyone’s prediction from the onset when the Nominees were revealed. It was a tough one, however, as Kikky Badass also dropped the Bloodline album which was among the biggest of 2020.

Jonn The Producer won one again for Masvingo as the Best Producer of the Year. Most popular projects dropped this year were produced by Jonn, including the Best Album, Bata MaStreets (The First Book Of Loco) and Bloodline Album by Kikky Badass.

However, critics have risen regarding the Best Male Award, Best Alternative and Best Female Award. But hey, results don’t always turn out how fans expect.

The founder and organizer Beefy Harrison paid his dues to all the promoters who pitched in to make it happen. He extended his thanks to all the artists and people who attended the event. However, it was unfortunate that when calling out Holy Ten as winner of his award, it sounded as though we was not happy to do so. This shows elements of favoritism and makes the show’s authenticity questionable.

And as with most award ceremonies, there is always something to keep fans talking thereafter. This year, there was confusion as to why they closed the show with an amapiano song instead of a ZimHipHop song. Fans watching commented “Have they never watched the BET Awards?”, while others said “It’s a work in progress”. And indeed it is, bringing us one step closer to catching to with the rest of the world.

This year featured a special performance by Noble Stylz in honor of Calvin Mgcini Nhliziyo. Additionally, we enjoyed the cyphers performances from Harare (BlacPerl, Noble Stylz, MC Chita, Soko Matemai) and Bulawayo (Thome Laroc, Ash K, Prozac, Asaph, Orthodox 6,HK). Check Out the performances below:
